Baghdad, my sweetheart's nameBaghdad, my sweetheart's name

Baghdad, my sweetheart's name o you who ask me about her…

She parted with me and no more seen, so my eyes longed for her…

I longed to see her gateway, palms, sky, soil and people in which they live…

Out of my love and longing for her I started to see her in my dreams, see her face before me, and yesterday I saw her and wished I had not, I saw her crying  I saw a black cloud in her sky I wandered in her  roads but no  children were playing in sight…

No young people were walking…

No old men sitting in streets…

No smile seen, no people celebrating a wedding

Everything beautiful thing disappeared, I saw indescribable things for their ugliness, I couldn't write them for their unsightliness, people who aggrieve…

People who kill… and others die…

Ah Baghdad, o my heart I cry for you… nothing remained therein but my beloved people… I rushed to see my beloved people and wipe tears from the eyes…

I reached the house of my beloved people knocked the door nobody answered!!  I knocked heavily on the door and shouted where my beloved people are? Where my family and friends are? I screamed asking the house where your dwellers have gone to?...

He said: your beloved people abandoned me and left nothing to me but silence …

Why have left me my beloved people? Why deserted Baghdad? As I am in your absence a stranger in my homeland and my sweetheart named Baghdad … you who ask about the name of my sweetheart … Baghdad she is  Baghdad, my sweetheart's name
